Today was Brandon Parkway Trail Clean-up Day. Mary, Tony, Deborah, Bonnie F. and Marie left the Weight Watcher Meeting right at 7:00 AM to make sure they were at the Brandon Parkway Trail parking lot before 7:15 AM. When they arrive at the parking lot, Nancy Marino form the Expressway Authority was there waiting at the handicap ramp near the new trash can. I introduced myself to Nancy. She was there with a photographer and her little dog. I have a lapse in memory and don't remember the photographer's or the dog's names. You can see them on video and slide show that Tony took and put on the blog. Tony did video as Nancy talked to the group about what the Expressway Authority is doing to keep the Trail in good shape. Nancy gave us these neat "Be Seen" yellow and orange vests to wear. She also gave me water bottles, coasters and key chains as monentoes to distribute to our clean up crew after we were finished. We put on our vests and rubber gloves, and picked up our plastic bags and pickup sticks. Nancy's photographer took a picture of everybody by the handicap ramp wall. After that photos we walked down to beginning of the trail and Tony took the usual walk start photos. Julie did her usual trip to Pauls Ave. and back to the start. Tony and Bob went along the grassy area by the parking lot. Mary, Bonnie, Susan, Christine and Amanda walked along the trail. Nancy joined in the walk down the trail for a bit of the way with her little cute dog.
Adventuresome Deborah crossed over the Parkway median and started picking up there. Deborah won the award for the most unique piece of trash picked up. She found a red metal rear rack from a bicycle in the median of the Parkway. Deborah also was our only injury on the clean up crew. She scratched her leg and when we were at the dumpster at the end of the clean up I notice the blood. Of course as a good Trail Mom, I had a first aid kit in my fanny pack. Bonnie F., our resident nurse, cleaned the wound and put a band aid on it. Deborah's injury would not prevent her from going to Disney World this weekend.
Gary, aka Pole Man, arrived a little late and had to catch up. He brought his pool net that was on a long pole. He was able to snag a snack bag from the big pond. It is too bad that we did not see the fish frenzy, maybe he could have caught one in his net and we could identify what type of fish they are.
Bonnie P. was not with us today with her camera to catch the wildlife. When I called her this afternoon , she said that she over slept. So much for Sally getting her morning coffee today. In Bonnie's absence Tony did get some photos of the Osprey. In one of the photos is also a para glider. We did see a bunny, the morehens and a great blue heron. There were no sightings of Suzie, the Nutria.
The most common item to pick up was cigarette butts. They seemed to be almost every where, especially on Lakewood, after the intersection of the Parkway. Bonnie F.'s husband parked his truck at Main Street and met us. He needed coffee, so he left us and went to Dunkin Donuts. Tony, Gary, Bob, Christine, Amanda, Bonnie F., Susan, and I went all the way to the storm sewer drain just before the Oakfield Drive intersection on Lakewod Ave. The trail has a railing along there because there is a steep drop off. At the bottom of that steep drop is a grated storm sewer, filled with junk on top of it including the dinning room chair. At that point it was about 8:30 AM and we could hear thunder in the background and were experiencing some light precipitation. We started to head back. I will send an e-mail to Nancy and ask about who maintains that area on Lakewood. If it is the Expressway Authority, they will need to come and do some serious clean-up there. If it is not them, I am sure Nancy will know who we need to contact to get something done about it. On our way back we found some litter we had missed on the way out. We also met up with Lori and Tristan just after the round about.
When we got back to the parking lot, Al ( Bonnie's husband) was parked and sitting in his truck, I am not sure if had finished his coffee when we arrived. Deborah was waiting for us at the handicap ramp with her bike equipment and a large bag of trash. Tony took some photos when we got back to the start of the trail and again after we put our trash in the Mercantile Back dumpster. After that I gave The Clean-up Crew their water bottles, coasters and key chains.
After we were all done Tony, Mary, Bonnie F., Al, Bob, Christine and Amanda went to Golden Corral to celebrate a job well done! Tony took his camera to the restaurant to take photos but forgot to take any. We all left around 10:15 AM. We all had a nice breakfast and enjoyed talking.
Tony and I will be gone Wednesday, June 25th and Saturday, June 28th. Bonnie and Christine are not going to walk at the mall on 25th, both are busy with other stuff to do. Bob will no be at the Wednesday night walk on June 25th at the Trail. It is his Wedding Anniversary and he is taking his wife out for dinner. There are still plans for the 6:45 PM walk at the trail on Wednesday. I am not sure exactly who will be there. The Saturday walk on June 28th will go on as usual at 7:15 AM on the Trail.
