Right after her Perfect Attendance Award, Julie through out her back and missed two Saturday walks. She was back with us on Saturday, December 13th. Julie was feeling well enough to go to Pauls Ave. and back. Marie, Susan,Bonnie P. and Bonnie F. were not with us today. The Holiday Season keeps everybody busy. It was 39 degrees on the Trail on December 13th. I think was one of the coldest Saturdays we have had in 2008. Tony was very creative with the pictures and song that he used in the December 13th Walk sideshow.

We will be walking on Wednesday, December 17th at the Westfield Brandon Mall at 6:45 PM. We meet at the Food Court entrance. Last week the Holiday shoppers were not a problem. Being closer to Christmas it will be more crowded on December 17th, but I am sure we will be able to bob and weave around the shoppers. We will do the usual stop at Panera Bread for coffee and conversation after the walk.

We will be at the Brandon Parkway Trail on Saturday, December 20th at 7:15 AM. Bonnie P. and Bonnie F. will be away on the 20th. Hopefully we will have some warmer weather that day.

We are hoping that members come back after the first of the year that have not walked since the hot weather. Lately, on most Saturdays we have about 4 - 8 people.
To make "2009 miles in 2009" we will have average a little less than 40 miles a week. With our low attendance on Saturdays, making 40 miles a week will probably have to add another walking day in addition to Wednesdays to get to the 40 mile a week goal. If you have suggestions on day of week and time for an additional walk, please let me know.

The "2008 Miles in 2008" Celebration was a great success. Bonnie P. was a great hostess. Thanks to Bonnie F., Bob, Susan, Christine, Deborah, and Tony for working hard to make the party food and drink so wonderful. We were sorry that Gary and Cindy could not attend, since they were the ones that got The Nameless Walking Group of Brandon started on this monumental journey. Julie received here Saturday Walk Perfect Attendance Award. She was thrilled. There was discussion of "2009 Miles in 2009". Hopefully we will have greater number of walkers on Saturday mornings, so we will be bale to meet that goal. The weather is cooler now, so there are no reasons for not walking on the trail with us on Saturdays.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.

We will be walking on Wednesday, December 3rd at the Westfield Brandon Mall at 6:45 PM. We meet at the Food Court entrance. Since it is dark at 6:45 PM now, we feel safer at the mall. Hopefully the Holiday shoppers will not get in our way.

We will be at the Brandon Parkway Trail on Saturday morning. We like to start walking at 7:15 AM sharp, but lately the folks coming from the Weight Watchers meeting have been getting out a little late. Hope we have a good crowd on Saturday, December 6th.

Don't know if Julie was at the Trail on Saturday. I have sent her and e-mail and have not heard back. Pam was welcomed back from completing walking 62 miles in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day October 31-November 2nd. We are all very proud of her and it is nice to have her back with us. Marie was able to walk to the round about on her first walk after being on injured reserve. We are so glad she is on the mend. We have missed both her and Pam.

Just a Reminder that our Wednesday evening walks will be at the Trail at 6:45 PM. from now on at least until the Holiday Season is over at the Mall.

Don't forget that the "2008 Miles in 2008" Celebration is on November 22nd at 8:30 AM at Bonnie Powell's home. We are hoping for a great turnout. Gary will be home from New York City and will be joining us. It will be great to see our leader. Without Gary we would not be having this celebration. Please RSVP to your Evite invitation on-line. If you are coming the evite will give you directions. If you have problems with your evite, please send an e-mail to Deborah.

Walkers October 30 2008

Pam's October Journal Entry

Here are a few thoughts on the eve of my big walk……………………

I miss:

  • Walking for fun
    • 20 miles is not FUN, I will be glad to walk on the parkway again
      • I almost walked the parkway last week for 10 miles so you all would only have to walk ¼ mile to make the goal, but then I figured you all could handle the 10 miles without me J
    • Thank you for all your support and encouragement, you have all in your own ways kept me going
  • Counting points
    • None of that if you do not eat you will faint, I gave up when I ate a 20 point lunch one day it is too depressing
  • Shopping with Deborah
    • This is the time of year to catch bargains just before Christmas she is a great bargain finder
  • High Heels
    • I will be the shortest person in the house in a couple of years you know you are getting old when you have to look up to your kids
    • I think if I attempted a high heel I would break my ankle so I will wait
  • Life without Advil
    • My body is in pain all the time it is not made to walk 20 miles daily
    • I thought it was me, but I found out some people take it before they work out all the time, imagine that………….
  • Free time
    • Training takes at least 3 hours a day this last two months, more on the weekends
    • Free time not down time I want to decline party invitations because I don’t want to go not because I am too busy or tired
  • Pedicures
    • I stopped looking at my toes when I got the first blister, I pity the person that must work on me Monday ( I will not go to work that day I will be at the spa with some of my fellow walkers)
  • Thinking about Goal Weight
    • When I started I was 6 pounds from goal weight ; I stopped weighting myself when I gained 5 pounds so who knows how far I am now
    • Don’t give me the muscle/ fat argument weight is weight and I am far from goal weight
    • BUT……I created a new goal I WILL finish this walk and raise money and awareness about Breast Cancer THEN deal with the weight goal next year (no since in starting something before Thanksgiving and Christmas)

I hope to see you all at the party in November,

Pam

Congratulations From The Big Apple

I want to say congratulations and extend my warmest regards to a great group of people. I wish I could have been there and lived through the moment when the Nameless Walking Group went over the top. I couldn't be there in person but certainly was there in spirit.

Hope you are all doing well. Perhaps we will have an opportunity to see each other sometime during the holiday season. In any event please savor the accomplishment. You own the moment!

Later....Gary

Saw Julie leaving as we were getting to the parkway on Saturday morning, so her perfect attendance is still intact. It was a beautiful morning for a walk. The weather was cooler than it has been. We thought maybe the cooler weather would bring back some of our members we have not seen for a while, but that was not the case. We did have Martha, Judy's sister, and Rodney, Martha's husband joined us. Marie started out with us and had to stop after we got to the parking lot ramps because her leg is still giving her problems. Hopefully Marie's Doctor will have the test results back this week and she start getting treatment for her problem. Christine was able to join us. She was going into work a little later on Saturday. Five of use went to the SR 60 Family Restaurant for breakfast after we walked. It had a buffet that was very limited in the items available. Tony's favorite after walk restaurant is still Golden Coral, because it has a wide verity of good foods and it is very reasonably priced.

We will be walking at the mall on Wednesdays for a while. The weather in the evenings is still in the 80's and would be pretty warm for walking. On October 1st, Bonnie F., Tony and I will be walking in the afternoon. We will not be at the mall in the evening to walk. We are going to a Financial Seminar on "The Current Economic Outlook" given by Merrill Lynch.

Saturday, October 4th is the Race for the Cure in St. Pete. There are 14 on our Team. If you walk on the Brandon Parkway Trail on Saturday, October 4th, please send an e-mail with your distance information. I will send out separate e-mails on Race for the Cure Information.

Julie did her usual walk to keep that Perfect Attendance Record in tact. We are very proud of her and when the weather gets cooler she be starting her walk later, so she can see the group before she leaves the trail. Marie is still having problems with her leg and isn't walking with us. She has more medical tests next week. Pam is still doing training for the Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk. Those of us that are going to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in St. Pete on October 4th will get to see here and her family at that event. We do miss her and it great to see her in October. She will be walking with us again sometime in November. She is an inspiration to all of the Nameless Walking Group members. Deborah is in Chicago at her High School class reunion this weekend. Liane is in Orlando visiting University of Central Florida with he youngest daughter. It seems hard to believe that Liane has children old enough to go to college. Gary is in Long Island New York this weekend. Bo said he had talked to him and said that Gary maybe in Florida for the weekend very soon. It would be great if he could walk with us. We sure to miss Gary. We also miss seeing Cindy. Hopefully one of these Saturday mornings she will pull up in her SUV and her gang will get out and little Timothy will get his first ride on the Trail. Susan will not be doing the Race for the Cure. Her parents will be visiting for Ohio that weekend. After today's walk, Bonnie F.'s husband Al, joined the two Bonnies, Tony and myself at Mimi's Cafe for a healthy breakfast. Next week we are planning to go to a new restaurant that is where the Pizza Hut used to be on Brandon Blvd. Kathie says the name of the Restaurant is Apache Family Restaurant. I will put our restaurant review in next weeks Mileage Update.

With less than 200 Miles to go to get to our goal of "2008 Miles in 2008", we need to start thinking about our celebration for meeting our goal. So far all we have planned is that we are going to do have the event in Bonnie P's back yard.We have talked about a tailgate breakfast after a Saturday morning walk. " Betty the Banker" a.k.a. "Cash Cow" has over $100.00 in her to pay for this event. If you have ideas about the celebration that you want the group to consider, e-mail them to me.

We will be walking at the mall on Wednesday, September 24th, at the mall and the Brandon Parkway Trail on Saturday, September 27th, at 7:15 AM.

Mary, Tony, Bob, Deborah are back from vacations.Everybody had great trips. The after walk breakfast on Saturday was at the Latin Cafe on Bloomingdale Ave. Bonnie F."s daughter, Martica (Spanish for Martha) workers there and she waited on our table. The Cuban toast and cafe con leche, which translated from Spanish, literally means "coffee with milk" were great.

There is still time to sign up for the next Nameless Waking Group Charity walk. Deborah is our Team Captain for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday October 4th at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg. Deborah has sent out group e-mails with the information on how to sigh up. If you have questions or need help send me an e-mail.

Tony and I saw Joan yesterday in Riverview. She says she will be walking again when the weather cools off.

Bob says that Gary will be home at the end of September for visit. We hope he will have time to walk with us on Saturday morning, but will understand if he is busy with family.

We have less than 250 miles to go to get to "2008 Miles in 2008!". Our Race for the Cure in October will give our mileage a real boost. since we already have 14 people signed up and raised over $800.00.

We will be walking at the mall on Wednesday, September 17th, at around 2:00 PM and then again at 6:45 PM. We will also be at the Brandon Parkway Trail on Saturday morning at 7:15 AM.

Pam's First 3-Day Walk Journal Entry

Hi everyone,

I love this so much I already signed up for the Michigan walk for next year. I miss you all and will be glad to get back to the group in November. We are up to 18 miles now, the most we will do until the walk.

Here are a few observations I made along the way:

Mile 0 – people show up for the walk in all shapes sizes and fitness levels

Mile 3 – tall people have a great advantage walking their stride keeps them ¼ mile ahead of the rest

Mile 6 – you get why you spent the money for the dry-fit clothing; EVERY MOVING PART of you is wet or has a blister if not

Mile 9 – you know why $100 pair of shoes cost $100; and you are very happy you spent the money

Mile 12 – you can not judge a book by its cover; the outwardly overweight and elderly individuals are passing you by with ease

Mile 15 – every joint hurts and you can tell who took the Advil 10 miles ago

Mile 18 – YOU FINISHED! Now go home and get ready to do it again tomorrow, am I crazy or what?

See you all in October and thanks again for all your encouragement,

Pam

From Bonnie P.
Was a very, very small group this morning for the walk. Bonnie F. and Bonnie P. met Susan at the Parkway. Since Bonnie F. was leaving for Vero Beach today and had to get home to pack up supplies, clothes, etc., we all agreed to go as far as the roundabout. Of course, Bonnie P. never gets any farther than that anyway. Don't know if Julie was there earlier as Susan said Julie wasn't there when she arrived.

On Wednesday, September 3rd, Bonnie F. , Tony and myself walked 3 laps of the Mall in the afternoon. On the last lap we made our usual stop at the new Yogurt Store in the new wing. The frozen yogurt and toppings are very Weight Watcher friendly. at 5-10 calories per ounce you can get a nice portion for less than 2 points. In the evening Jennifer stopped by the Mall and picked up her and Christine's T-Shirts. Jennifer couldn't stay to walk but hopes by the end the month to walk with us on Wednesdays, when she will have her own transportation. Bob called at 6:40 PM he had just gotten home from work and couldn't walk with us. Bonnie P. Tony and I, decide we needed a break from walking and went to Panera Bread and had coffee and treats. We had a nice conversation about hurricanes, tornadoes and politics.

The usual Saturday walk at the Brandon Parkway Trail will start at 7:15 AM or very shortly there after depending on what time the Weight Watchers get to the trail. Tony and I will be in Upstate New York for my 40th High School Class Reunion. Tony and I will be back on Wednesday, September10th and hope to walk at the mall that day.

Miles to go to hit "2008 miles in 2008" - 276.55 miles

It was a small crowd walking on Saturday, but we did get an additional 16.1 miles in for our total. We are less than 300 miles away from our goal and we have 122 days let to get to "2008 Miles in 2008". Marie was unable to join us on Saturday morning because her Mom was has been feeling under the weather. We are praying for a speedy recovery for Marie's Mom.

Saying thank you is such a wonderful feeling

Hello everyone:

I am up here in New York and trying to sort everything out before I start my new job on Tuesday. These last few months have been quite an adventure for me. The experience allowed me to find out a lot about myself and my life, not the least of which were the lessons I learned about the value of the friendships I have.

Of course there are many mixed feelings and emotions here given the nature of the solution and the situation that has subsequently been created. Given my age and other challenges that I had to face head on under the circumstances I am thrilled to have found a new job. I will be challenged and also given the opportunity to make a real contribution to something meaningful. This is the sweet side. On the other hand I have to be separated from my family and say farewell to my friends. This is extremely difficult for me.

I am very lucky to have a wife of 36 years whom I am still madly in love with and who can still make my day just with her smile. I miss her very much already. I also miss my daughter and I'm probably driving here crazy by calling the house 12 times a day. I've learned a great deal from both these women over the years. Not being there with them in Florida is very very tough for me as you might imagine.

What I also learned though is how important my friends in Florida have become to me and how much I miss them already. Of particular note are the friends I have made through the Nameless Walking Group. It all started out as a noble pursuit in the interest of health maintenance, but this group turned into something much more than that for me. I will remember for the rest of my life the Saturday and Wednesday walks, the discussions about various topics...the kids, the grandkids, photography, jobs, spouses, politics or anything that suited the moment. Breakfast.

I thank you all for these wonderful experiences and memories. Mary and Tony, Keith and Val, Bonnie and Bonnie, Deborah, Marie, Julie, Pam, Bob, Cindy and family, Christine, and everyone else I had the pleasure of walking with....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Special Thanks to Bob O'Donnell. Bob, I hope we will always maintain our friendship and I can't thank you enough for all the things that you have introduced me to. Don't forget Gasparilla in '09. Mary and Tony...you are magic! Nobody could ever ask for anymore out of a friendship than I have experienced from ours!

As soon as I'm settled down here I will resume my walking. I don't think that my miles can count toward the club total, but know they are being clocked in the spirit of this thing we have started. I hope at least to be there in spirit with all of you when the 2008 mile goal is reached.

For all those who took me to breakfast and gave me such a nice sendoff....I can only say thank you once again. I carry my digital picture frame on my key chain.

Thanks for everything and it is my hope that everyone who has experienced the Nameless Walking Group will continue to put a priority on their health maintenance and will include walking as a mainstay for that pursuit!

Later.....

Group News

The Weight Watcher meeting attendees were late getting to the Parkway Trail, and it was not raining at 7:20 AM. When Gary arrived a little early at the Parkway Trail, he assumed we went to Golden Coral, since it was raining. Gary not finding anyone at Golden Coral returned to the Parkway and found us hanging out deciding if we should take a chance of getting wet if we walked. The consensuses was to go to Golden Coral and start Gary's Good Bye Celebration a little early. It was a nice time. You can see all of the photos of the celebration on the blog. Gary is driving to New York and leaves tomorrow morning. We all wish safe travels and good luck with the new job. Tony talked to Julie on Tuesday and she said she walked her usual route on the Parkway Trail on Saturday in the rain with an umbrella. Congratulations to Julie. She is our only perfect attendance walker.

On Wednesday, August 27th, I got an e-mail from Bonnie P. that she would not make it to the Mall to walk on this evening. Tony and I decided we would cancel the Wednesday evening, since Deborah and Bob are on vacation. Tony and I did meet Bonnie F. and walked 3 laps of the Mall in the afternoon. On the last lap we stopped at the new Yogurt Store in the new wing. The frozen yogurt and toppings are very Weight Watcher friendly. at 5-10 calories per ounce you can get a nice portion for less than 2 points.

We will meet at the Parkway Trail at 7:15 AM on Saturday. We will miss Gary and Deborah. Bob will be back from vacation and should be joining us. Pam sent me an e-mail that she might make it to the WW meeting on Saturday. She and her husband are going to Fort Lauderdale to board a cruise ship on Saturday. The cruise is to celebrate their 19th Wedding Anniversary.

Good Evening Gary and Friends,

I could not let the day go by without adding my farewell to Gary. I am sorry that my Mom and I could not make it today, but as you all know, she has not been feeling well, and I have been keeping her close to home for recovery.
Gary, a part of me is not surprised that you would be moving to NY to a town that has SUCCESS in it. I have watched you handle your personal challenges with a zest and a very determined face, ya know, the one with the eye brows that are centered close, which adds a wrinkle in your forehead. Life sure has given you a run for your wrinkles but it was your determination, your love for your family, and your spirit to feel success that has brought you to this stage of your life. So now you are off to NY. A new chapter in your life.
It's your story Gary, it's your life and you are the writer. Problem is, we write it as we go along and we never know how it is going to end. So, here's my advice, keep your beginning close to your heart, and forget knowing or understanding your final chapter. Just take your time, sit back. and enjoy the "meat & potato's" of your book. All the days of your life and the new days ahead. Fill your life with a ton of success and a ton of love and you will never worry or be concerned about your ending. Life has a way of giving chances to have the best ending ever but it is how we live the middle of our book, the middle of our life, that puts us in the writer seat. Write your chapters with love, with success, and with the thrill to enjoy each day of your next chapter. You are a GOOD PERSON Gary, you have added chapters in so many other's book, and you will be remembered.
Stay Happy, healthy, and safe for life.
God Bless you Friend,

Cindy

There were 7 who walked Saturday, plus Julie was just getting ready to leave as you can see by the picture. Plus we met Dale on his way back from the roundabout. Julie did her usual.
Marie, Bonnie F., Martha and Judy all went to 60 and back. Deborah and Pam kept me company to the roundabout and back. In the final picture everyone is waving to Pam and wishing her luck for her walk in October. Saturday was her final walk until October. Not much wildlife, just our usual osprey and heron. The sunrise is taken from the parking lot at WW.

Bonnie F. was the only person that walked on Wednesday afternoon, since I did not check my e-mail until after I should have arrived at the Mall. Bonnie F. walked two loops, before she decided to give up on me arriving. We now have each other's cell phone numbers. To make up for not walking yesterday, Bonnie F. and I went to the mall this morning and walked three loops. After that Bonnie F. headed out and I went shopping for a couple of hours. Found some good bargains at J C Penney's.

On Wednesday evening, Tony and I went at the Mall at 6:30 PM. Just after we arrived there was a 10 minute or so down pour. We waited at the Food Court and pretty soon Bonnie P. arrived. We waited until 7:00 PM to see if anybody else was coming. We did a lap and a half and then went to Panera Bread for coffee. We left the mall around 8:30 PM.

Tony and I will be in Georgia this weekend. The Group will be meeting as usual at the Brandon Parkway Trail at 7:15 AM. This rainy weather should be all gone by then. We will be back on late on Monday, August 18th.

The new T-Shirts have been ordered. We should have them by Saturday, August 30th.

Congratulations to Gary on getting a new Job! He will be working in New York. It was under his leadership that we became The Nameless Walking Group of Brandon, Florida.
We will truly miss him. Hopefully, when he comes home to Florida he will be able to walk with us.

Was a little iffy early this morning as to whether we would be able to get the walk in since it was sprinkling when I got out of the car for the meeting. Luckily the showers waited until we were finished.
We picked up three new people this morning since mention was made at the meeting about our group walking. They are Judy Shehan and Martha & Rodney Cribbs. I did not get the e-mail address for the Cribbs and have copied you my e-mail to Judy. Judy is the one standing next to Deborah.
Julie was there, but had left before we arrive since we were a little late leaving the meeting. I'm assuming she walked her usual.
Susan waited until 7:15 and since no one had arrived as yet she started without us. She passed Deborah and Marie on her way back from 60 and caught up with me on my way back. I did my usual to the round-about.
I FINALLY got pictures of the Rosette Spoonbill as well as our resident Ospreys, etc. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the one of the sun trying to break free of the clouds and discovered I had also captured a Dragonfly.
The three new walkers did not go to 60 but instead crossed Brandon Pwy. and headed down to Lumsden then on back to the starting spot. As I said in the e-mail to Judy, I clocked it at 2.2 miles total.

Deborah did her usual Sunday walk on the Parkway Trail. Mary meet Bonnie F. who was back form vacation at the Brandon Mall at 2:00 PM. They walked 2 laps because they needed to leave a little early. At 6:45 PM sharp, Mary, Deborah, Bob and Tony started their mall walk. They completed 3 laps. Deborah lost her insulated water bottle bag along the way. Mary and Deborah retraced their steps and found it laying on a counter in one of the kiosks. We meet back up with Bob and Tony. After we went to Panera Bread and had coffee. While we were in line waiting to order, Bonnie P. came in. She had just come from the Airport after dropping her grand daughter off to go home to New Hampshire. Gary missed walking this evening . He is going on a job interview in New York, tomorrow.

Tony and I will be in Athens, Georgia this weekend. They will be back on Sunday. Bob will be leaving on vacation on Thursday, August 14th. He won't be back walking with us until Saturday August 30th.
